Rational Software Architect 8.0 beta and Rational Application Developer 8.0 beta

Rational Software Architect 8.0 beta is now available for you to try out as part of the Rational Software Architect open beta program. For information on all of the new Rational Software Architect enhancements visit the Rational Software Architect wiki – specifically the v8 beta pages on the wiki, and the Information Center for the 8.0 beta.

The related Rational Application Developer 8.0 beta is also available. More information is available on the Rational Application Developer wiki pages for the beta program and in the Information Center for the 8.0 beta.

The two 8.0 beta programs are related to the Websphere Application Server 8.0 beta that I have previously mentioned.

Thanks to Andy Piper for pointing this out.

Webcast: Using Rational Team Concert in a Globally Distributed Team

Erich Gamma from the Rational Jazz team has just recorded and posted a 60 minute webcast on the subject of using Rational Team Concert in a globally distributed team. Erich covers topics such as server setup, release planning, iteration planning and finishing a release.

Have a look if you are interested in agile methods.

Rational Team Concert 1.0 is now available

Rational Team Concert 1.0 is now available on jazz.net. You can download a free version with a server and 3 client licenses included. Team concert “provides a development environment that allows developers to collaborate together using integrated Source Control, Work Items, Build, Dashboards, Reports, and Process support.

I am especially interested in the support for agile projects via the iteration planning and work item management feature combined with the collaboration support – and all this in the same package.

I do architect related work for a J2EE project at the moment where agile planning takes place in ScrumWorks, source control is via CVS, code development is via Rational Software Architect, overall project planning is via Rational Portfolio Manager, and remote collaboration is done via Lotus Sametime. From that perspective Rational Team Concert looks very interesting!

Jazz is now open to everyone

Jazz.net is now open to everyone. From the site: “Jazz is an IBM Rational project to build a scalable, extensible team collaboration platform for integrating work across the phases of the development lifecycle“.

According to Andy Patrizio from internetnews.com Jazz can be compared to SourceForge and Subversion.

The Jazz team blog has also been opened up for the public.

Scalability of Rational Performance Tester

IBM has an interesting case study on using Rational Performance Tester to test the US Open web servers. For the performance test only just two standard PCs running Windows XP were needed in order to generate almost 25,000 hits per minute to a single node.

I have experience using Rational Performance Tester on web projects and I agree with the case study that it is easy to record browsing scenarios and add the recorded scenarios to a test schedule that generates work loads on a web site.

I read the case study via a link from The Rational Tester blog which is run by Brian Bryson from IBM Rational Quality Management. So if you are interested in Rational test tools, keep an eye on Brians blog.

And by the way: there is a draft Redbook on “Using Rational Performance Tester Version 7” with a planned publish date of January 31, 2008.

Rational Software Delivery Platform V7.0 released

IBM has today released the Rational Software Delivery Platform V7.0 – a comprehensive set of products that include the long awaited Rational Software Architect V7.0 (RSA) and Rational Application Developer V7.0 (RAD) and also products such as Rational Functional Tester V7.0 and Rational Performance Tester V7.0.

Tutorial: Design SOA services with Rational Software Architect

A new tutorial called “Design SOA services with Rational Software Architect” has been posted on developerWorks. The tutorial is part 1 of a series and “you will learn about the relationship between a set of tools in the IBM® Rational® Software Development Platform that you will use as you design an SOA-based service using Model-Driven Development (MDD). You’ll see how to access requirements from different sources, use a customized software development process, and then start to model a design for the required service”.

Rational Software Architect V7.0 open beta program

You can now preregister for the Rational Software Architect V7.0 and Rational Functional Tester V7.0 open beta program. The beta program is set to start in October 2006.

From the press release:

“Clients participating in the beta program can experiment with new and improved features that help implement service oriented architectures, systems development, and geographically distributed applications.”

New features in the upcoming Rational Software Architect V7.0 includes:

  • Easier installation experience
  • Improved Web Diagram editor
  • Improved C++ support
  • Expanded unit testing, with WebSphere® Application Server V6.1
  • Improved Web Security tools
  • New team modeling capabilities

Since the release of Rational Software Architect (RSA) V7.0 is getting closer we should expect Rational Application Developer (RAD) V7.0 to be released soon also.

Update December 2006: Rational Application Developer V7.0 and Rational Software Architect V7.0 has been released.
