Lotus Notes Traveler: easy push mail for Domino

I recentry upgraded a Lotus Domino server to 8.5 and installed Lotus Notes Traveler 8.5 – and the upgraded Domino server was up and running with Traveler loaded within two hours!  Potential mobile clients could then connect and install the provided Traveler client software. However, I do not own a Nokia S60 device or a Windows Mobile device which are the devices currently supported by Traveler. I own an iPhone and eagerly await that an upcoming release of Traveler will support ActiveSync and thereby support push mail for the iPhone.

Lotus Notes Traveler was introduced with the Domino 8.0.1 release and is and now in release 8.5. Traveler is push mail for Lotus Domino and other solutions in the push mail area include Excitor with DME, Visto, Funambol, and of course Blackberry with their Enterprise Server product.

Documentation for Traveler 8.5 is available and the following presentation is a good introduction to the features of the Traveler 8.5 release:

Lotus Notes Traveler: push mail for Domino 8

I have previously written about the Dynamic Mobile Exchange (DME) and Funambol push mail solutions – and now IBM has announced that a push mail solution called IBM Lotus Notes Traveler will be part of the Domino server in the 8.01 release. This is very exciting news!

It looks like the push mail solution will be based on the Visto Mobile solution from Visto but Lotus Notes Traveler will only support Windows Mobile devices at first, in contrast to Visto Mobile that also supports Symbian, Palm OS, J2ME, WAP, HTML, and Imode – with support for the iPhone coming in Q3 2007.

Update: after re-reading the announcement and related material I need to correct myself. Lotus Notes Traveler will consist of a Domino server task meaning that a server in-between the mobile devices and the Domino server is not necessary (in contrast to e.g. the DME and Funambol solutions). Furthermore, Lotus Notes Traveler will consist of a new client that runs on Windows Mobile devices – and this client is not based on the Visto Mobile solution from Visto.

Push email and mobile synchronization for Domino

I have been on a project with the purpose of implementing “secure push email” that enables off-site users to access their Lotus Domino mail, calendar and address book using a mobile phone. This is achived using a product called Dynamic Mobile Exchange (DME) from a danish company called Excitor. DME acts as the client on the mobile phone and most importantly as a server in the DMZ that connects the mobile client with the internal Lotus Domino infrastructure. There is a short technical introduction to DME available.

The DME product is a competitor to the BlackBerry products such as the BlackBerry Enterprise Server for IBM Lotus Domino.

I was reminded of this product when reading a post by Budi Febrianto on Funambol: Open Source Domino Sync. The Funambol open source project looks very interesting and I would like to try it out. Funambol is both available as open source and as a commercial offering with differences in features.
